Space Exploration : Climate Change Conversations – Upcoming Exhibition
The Larks and Ravens will be occupying the Tobacco Factory in Bristol for two weeks in September creating playful spaces and employing spectres, inviting us to explore perspectives, myths and questions around Climate Change. Who do we listen to? Who is writing the story? How do contexts change our behaviour and who are we in this changing world?
The Space Exploration Exhibition runs on weekdays only from Monday 14th September to Thursday 24th September at the Tobacco Factory Raleigh Rd, Bristol, BS3 1TF
Thinking differently in private spaces
The Larks & Ravens busy exploring how we feel, think or respond differently to climate change questions in private, rather than, public spaces.
Discussing climate change with spectres – what does it sound like?
On Thursday evening 26th March, we ran the second of our ‘Space Explorations – Speed Dating with Spectres’ events at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol.
This time, the multiple spectres hovered in our midst, suspended from the ceiling. This meant they played a part in more conversations either overtly or subliminally.
With everyone’s agreement, we set a digital recorder running in one corner of the room and here’s a 30 second taster of what a room full of people discussing climate change with one another sounds like.
Every now and again, we can catch a snatch of a comment from the recorded conversations – here are some of those conversational fragments:
“you die”, “we’d be a bit surprised”, “it frightens me”, “Bombay mix”, it’s hard to imagine the dinosaurs”, “is there a meaning?”, “the Pope?”, “I see that as a big one”, “we’re lucky”, “scientists sort of catch up”, “it’s a bit like exploring”, “Mick Jagger”, “trees and cars”, “the perfect view”, “worships this, worships that”, “it’s like rock stars”, “George Osbourne”, “how many calories have you had?”, “Putin”, “this is the most exciting thing”, “try and hold it together”, “at the coal face”, “but what about the French?”
Round 2 or in other words, another set of conversations
Please join us for Round 2 of Space Exploration.
If you joined us for our previous encounters come along and have new conversations with new people and spectres. If you are new to Speed Dating with Spectres come along and see what it is all about.
Space Explorations – Speed Dating with Spectres….
We are a small group of artists exploring contexts for conversations about climate change.
The conversations aren’t about what any of us are doing (or not doing) about climate change but how climate change might be changing us – our identities, politics, culture and economics and the meanings, myths and stories we live by.
We’d like to invite you to participate in an experimental event “Space Explorations – Speed Dating with Spectres” which will take place on Thursday 26th March in the Tobacco Factory. It isn’t important what your thoughts or opinions on Climate Change are (or even whether you have any), we simply invite you to come along and explore a space of possibilities.
The event is free but numbers are limited – if you would like to attend, please book a place by replying to artistseekingattention@hotmail.com before Wednesday 25th March.
Date: Thursday 26th March 6:30pm – 8 pm
Venue: The Green Room, The Tobacco Factory, Raleigh Road, Bristol BS3 1TF

So, what happened when 20 people speed dated with spectres?
Well, we had a room full of tables, candles, drinks, nibbles, questions and spectres – characters (together with the odd god, a foetus and death) who were both present and not present as part of our conversations.
Here’s the spectral host lining up in advance of the night….
And we welcomed 20 warm-blooded bodies with drinks in hand who nevertheless could appear as ethereal as the spectres with whom they shared the tables.
Every table had a pile of curly questions and some inquisitive fortune cookies – “what does growth mean in a finite world?”, “Do humans make progress or is that a myth?”, What’s the role of the spiritual in climate change?” Has capitalism run its course?”……
People sat down, picked up curly questions and explored a space of answers with whoever happened to be sitting at the table with them at the time be they human or spectre……
And after a few minutes, a bell rang and everyone moved tables…..
We learned that the pope and Tracy Emin (who unexpectedly shared a table) talked about what they had in common – revelling in upsetting the establishment apparently….
Sometimes, people (although not, as far as we know, the spectres) drew and wrote their responses on the tables. ….
And through it all, Pip drew the sounds she could hear….
And, when the final bell rang, we all retired to the Tobacco Factory bar and drank and ate and chatted until it was time to collect up the spectres and head for home.
What will happen next time? Impossible to know…..
